The Kauai Garden Cottage is situated in lush tropical countryside, less than a 10 minute drive away from beautiful east shore beaches and the many restaurants and shops located in Kapaa. On your way to and from the cottage you will pass splendid waterfalls, tropical rainforest and drive through gorgeous valleys. This is a quiet, out-of-town location close to many beautiful hiking trails - yet it's less than 10 minutes away from some of the best beaches and restaurants on the Island.
Most of the island's attractions are close by: Just 5 minutes away from the Cottage are the Opaeka'a Waterfalls and the Wailua River, where the Smith's Tour Boats will take you to the famed "Fern Grotto", used as a location in Elvis's "Blue Hawaii" movie. Kapaa town, about 10 minutes away from us, is the biggest "city" on Kauai where there is the most variety in restaurants and shops. The Wailua Golf Course is just south of Kapaa and offers an 18 hole course with quite reasonable green fees.
Our central location offers quick access to the scenic sugar country of the south shore or the taro fields of the northern coast.
Drive 30 minutes north of Kapaa and you will get to Kauai's lush North Shore and the towns of Princeville and Hanalei. More beautiful beaches await you. Check out Hanalei Bay, a 2 mile white sand beach famed for its winter surf. Make sure to drive all the way to the end of the road where you will find Ke'e Beach, one of the best snorkel beaches in the State of Hawaii.
On your way back, stop at the Kilauea Lighthouse and learn its rich Island history and don't miss the bird sanctuary surrounding it.
In the other direction, a 30 minute drive south will take you to famed Poipu Beach, the "Spouting Horn" and "Shipwreck Beach". Or carry on around the Island and check out Waimea town where time seems to be standing still. This is where Captain Cook first set foot on the Island. Don't forget to check out the Russian Fort just outside Waimea town.
Another 30 minutes drive will take you high into the mountains to gaze upon the Waimea Canyon, affectionately named the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" by Mark Twain. Don't miss the Kalalau Lookout while you're up there - this will give you your closest view of the Na Pali coastline, a panoramic view of Kauai's North Shore, unless you want to get 'up close and personal' and take a 3 day/ 11 mile hike or go by boat or helicopter.
Directions from the Airport:
Having arrived at the Kauai airport please turn RIGHT onto the main highway, Kuhio HWY - Route 56 North. It will take you about 10 minutes to reach Wailua River. Cross the river and turn left at the traffic light into Kuamo'o Road. Take Kuamo'o Road (HWY 580) up past the Opaeka'a Waterfalls and turn right at the Wailua Country Store onto Kamalu Road (HWY 581). Take Kamalu Road to Olohena Road and turn left on Olohena. The Tea Garden Cottage is about 3/4 mile up the road, on the right hand side of the street. The cottage, which is set back from the street, is a small beige house and you'll have to enter the driveway through the two big trees on the picture.
